NASA'S NEW MISSION - FIXING CARS

Being down here in Clear Lake a couple of miles from the Manned Space Flight Center, many are concerned about the local economy now that BO has decided we no longer need to be sending people into space. So, he has now commissioned NASA to get to the bottom of the problems with the Toyota's that seem to speed up when the accelerator is pressed all the way to the floor and held there by the driver. Now I'm sure that MASA can remedy that problem simply by changing the obvious - if the driver presses the accelerator all the way to the floor and holds it there it should be apparent to everyone that he intends to stop, so install a device that will do just that. Problem solved (except for the several billion dollars and a few years that will be required to finally actually reach that conclusion).

Big Gene Survives Yet Another Round with a Knife Weilding Surgeon

Had surgery yesterday to patch up an umbilical hernia, thus returning the original "innie" to its proper status after it had rebelled and turned itself into an "outie." Needless to say, I'm a little sore, but overall I feel OK. I slept yesterday and all night, so I'm up and about a little this morning early. It's cold and foggy outside, but all seems well in here. Thanksgiving trip to San Saba

Enjoyed visiting with friends and family in San Saba over the holiday. Had car trouble (burned up transmission in Suburban) on the return trip. Trouble began east of Austin, and I was able to limp all the way into Houston before it finally quit all together. My camera with the Thanksgiving photos is still in the car sitting in the repair yard, so hopefully I can recover it Monday. Got a full week coming - first of all, no car - two Suburbans and both with blow up transmissions - what's up with that. Got pre-op Monday, surgery Tuesday morning. Trying to get estimates on auto repairs and keep all the balls in the air at once.

Anyway, had a good trip and will try to post some photos later this week. More later.

Well, it's Halloween nite here at the Baitcamp. Kitty and I are stocked up with candy waiting for the young goblins to ring the bell, and in the interim, scanning a few Blogs. Never a week goes by without taking a look at http://iowahawk.typepad.com/iowahawk/, and am once again blown away by the way this guy can write. Pick any style, pick any story or current event, and in nothing flat you'll be laughing so hard you might get a hernia.

On another front, I've just about given up on the Chupacabra business. You may recall that I had originally planned to have them available to cater to a certain female who was a shoe-in as Democrat nominee to the White House. After that plan blew up due to lax oversight while checking all the woodpiles, I began a re-education effort designed more toward longer end of the light spectrum, if you know what I mean. Unfortunately for me, I was very late to discover that the Chupacabra and the Almost President Elect Blessed Father are not too distant relatives. In fact, research shows that the Chupacabra evolved from the lower species (Obamania crapusspker) as recently as the past 2000 years. Earlier forms of the crapusspker were noted in African digs prior to the 17th century, but with the advent of the sailing ship and the trade developing between US and Africa, the species escaped its native homeland and spread its evil spores across the world. Since the higher forms such as the Chupacabra have showed up, their development has been stunted due to fear and myths about their destructive behavious, but lo and behold, would you believe that they will not attack their biological relatives, even those ranking lower on the evolution scale. Oh well, back to the drawing board as soon as I complete my re-education training.

Speaking of re-education training, I am trying to get that over the internet or on CD or something, but it looks like I'm going to have to serve at least some "on campus" time. Guess it's about time somebody decided to try to set my mind straight once and for all.

Somehow, the Mayor of Seabrook has seen fit to order a lockdown on the city. He will not allow property owners to return to the city, and should I leave the city, I will not be allowed to return, even if I walked on block beyond the city limits to get gas for my generator. It's a pretty sad state of affairs when I try to be self-sufficient - plenty of water, food, pet food, gas, generator, batteries, ice, etc. - and only encounter one obstacle - that being the Seabrook Police Department (as order by Robin Riley, Mayor). All the pointers about rapid recovery include taking action within 72 hours of the event, yet Seabrook continues to the locked down and property owners excluded. My friends who have dropped by just sneaked in around the roadblocks, so it's not like they could prevent looters from coming in, it's just the honest citizens who pay the price once again.

Since Saturday morning, I've seen high visibility police units running the roads with lights blazing, caravans of government owned SUV's parading around, and a large flock of helicopters of all makes and sizes touring the area - I have not seen a dump truck with a crew of workers with shovels and rakes cleaning the roadways. Not one government person has offered to help but neighbors that sneaked into their homes have offered to help.

Once again, all the government ballyhoo we've been hearing about is hot air. They are still "staging" days after the event. Then they will develop a recovery plan. Then they will implement it, if there is anything left to do. Government proves once again that it is not the solution - it is the problem. Get it out of the way, and this place could recover. Left the way it is, everything will just rot in place.

Other things that don't make sense:

Eliminate tolls on toll roads but tell people to stay off the streets.

Keep people posted as to where groceries and supplies are available, but refuse to allow return to home if you go outside to get them.

FEMA knows there is no power, offers an 800 number to call for registration, but the 800 number merely referrs you to the web site which cannot be accessed without power.

Insanity apparently knows no limits. All you need to start an asylum is an empty room and a few of the right kind of people.

All the people getting the help are the ones that are easy to get to. Those in most need, who are most difficult to get to, get nothing.

SJL IKE GONE - NOW OWN TO THE REAL PROBLEM - CITY HALL

Finally got some power restored (actually pretty fast). It went out 11PM Friday nite and came on at 5PM Sunday. Centerpoint, the power distribution company, reports that it will take several weeks for everyone to be restored, and since Seabrook is now a "disaster" area, I cannot come back to my house if I leave it. More guestapo tactics by Seabrook PD. Somehow it must be for the common good, but I fail to see how denying people access to their property is good for anyone except the looters More on that later).

All's well that ends well. Lots of work left to do, and whether I want to admit it or not, guess I'm pretty lucky.

Skipped work tonight as the Kemah bridge is closed due to winds, the Kemah Boardwalk is completely under water as is most of the area of Seabrook east of SH 146. Still strong northerly winds although my weather station shows peak gusts of 38 mph. The storm eye (if there is one) shows to still be offshore, and the radar image barely shows a little red in and among the yellow rain bands. Kitty decided to go outside and play in the storm a little, but I expect that he will be back pretty soon. It's getting a little rough out there, but so far the power is holding on. More later.

SJL-Ike started arriving Friday afternoon, most noticably with the advent of storm surge flooding. I had been skeptical of the predicted storm surge, but the water did get pretty high in the low lying areas. Well, gotta hurry up and get rid of all these hurricane supplies that I got for SJL Gustav and head out to the Walmart and stock up for SJL Ike. I'm sure this one will prove to be the storm of the century since Gustav sort of turned out to be a fizzle. I think there are two or three more out there in the Atlantic headed our way too, so fall fun continues - buy water, drink it, pee a lot, buy new water... you get the idea. BTW, I didn't realize until the press told me that I had to buy new stuff for each storm - before I always just bought some stuff and kept it until the threat was over, but now they keep telling me to go buy batteries and water and stuff. Don't know what the batteries are for since you can't eat them, but hey, I just follow instructions.

THINGS I LEARNED ABOUT HURRICANES FROM METERORLOGIST IN NOLA

Last night while at work, local Channel 11 broadcast WWL from NOLA which was covering Hurricane SJL Gustav wall to wall and commercial free, and the coverage was actually pretty good overall. However, I did learn a few things from the meterorlogistette as SJL Gustav played out and never posed a threat to anything.

First, did you know that as you get closer to the eye of the hurricane the winds tend to increase? What a revelation.

This lady also reported that she contacted the National Weather Service in an effort to ascertain which areas were most vulnerable to the onslaught of SJL Guatav. She reports that the NWS told her that the most vulnerable areas were those closest to the coastline. Well what do you think of that?

Later, after discussing the total needless evacuation of southern Louisiana, including NOLA, and declaring it a great success, the reporter implied that the reason the hurricane lost all its fury was because there were no people left behind to do damage to. Was it a coincidence that there was no damage and all the people were gone? Of course not, had the people stayed, the hurricane would have come ashore as a Cat 4 or 5 rather than barely a Cat 2 - anybody should know that, right?

See what goes on late at night that most regular people who sleep at night miss out on. Even Art Bell couldn't top some of this stuff.

Some of you may recall that I got into a chupacabra breeding/marketing business several months back after finding a good deal on Michael Vick's dog kennels while he is gone away. I had planned to utilize these beasts to some extent during the Democrat Convention, but unfortunately, I had basically trained all the animals to respond to the scent of a female. Since the female was apparently aced out of the electorial race by a race baiting racist of a different race, the trained animals could not properly respond and had to be destroyed. While the new ones are being properly trained, it is uncertain just how many will actually be ready by the time of the convention, so needless to say, I've suffered a little financial setback. One of my animals escaped not long ago, and if you will check the video below, you will get a better idea of just what we are dealing with here.

AFTERMATH - HURRICANE SHELIA JACKSON LEE-EDOUARDO

Well, the hurricane that was never a hurricane to begin with has passed, and now it's time for damage assessment and clean-up. Looks like the grass has grown about 3 inches since the storm passed through, and I saw a dead twig that got knocked out of the tree. Hopefully the clean-up will start soon, because if they wait a full week to mow, the grass will be so high that it will choke the mower down. That's about it from my perspective, although the local press can probably make something disasterous about it. Maybe it hit women and minorities harder or something like that. Oh, I almost forgot, the mail was about 2 hours late also due to the storm. What a problem.

Once again my theory on hurricane safety has been proven out. Oh, you don' know my theory on hurricane safety? Well, here goes - the safest place to be when a hurricane is coming is directly strattle the line that says "Projected Path." Time and time again that is the one place you can confidently put yourself and know with absolute certainty that it will not hit there.

The subject hurricane never actually achieved hurricane status, but the local press would not let a little matter like that stand in the way of trying to generate more fear among the local populus. The storms arrived somewhat meekly about 90 miles north of the hoped for point (the media was hoping for a direct hit on Houston), the winds are not too bad, and there is some well needed rain associated with the system. After finally admitting that all their hype was wasted due to lack of cooperation of SJL(E), they did manage to point out that there was still the possibility of tornados spinning off the main system, so they still managed to keep hope alive for a total disaster. Channel 11 had one of their reporters (actually a male) in front of my place of business this morning, and I visited with him briefly and will just say that he readily admitted how stupid it is to stand out in the rain and tell the camera that it's raining, but that's his job. Bed time now, so more later. Can't wait for the next disaster in waiting (besides global warming).

I know, its not even a hurricane yet, and likely won't be, but I just can't seem to get that image of SJL demanding more African sounding names out of my mind. I'll also never forget her sitting on the NASA funding committee in Congress and demanding that those Mars rovers go over and take pictures where the astronauts planted flags when they were there in the late 1960's and early 1970's, but that's beyond the scope of this post. Anyhow, here's the latest.

LOCAL PRESS DISCOVERS POSSIBLE HURRICANE AT OUR DOORSTEP

Predictably, the regular broadcast crew at the local "news" radio station replaced the not ready for weekday weekend crew about 5AM today, and I was instantly greeted with some hysterical woman screeching gloom and doom and storm warnings and we'll all die, etc. Unbelievably irresponsible to ignore this yesterday and then , with virtually no facts being presented, start screaming dire warnings. They've cried "wolf" so many times that if there really were a serious emergency noone would pay any attention. Fortunately, as it now appears, we will get a fairly fast moving rain storm with some wind to go along with it. We need the rain, and if it doesn't slow down, we probably won't have any flooding to speak of. Anyway, I'm off to bed. More hurricane updates later.

NEW HURRICANE ON THE MOVE

While the press is sleeping, a new tropical storm has formed just south of New Orleans and will be headed straight for us over the next couple of days. You would have to listen to the local forecasts to believe it, but it is obvious that it was prepared before the weekend, and they just continue to forecast blue skys, 100 degree days, and slight chance of afternoon pop-up thunderstorms, oblivious to the formation of the new storm this weekend and oblivious to the fact that it is raining now. Guess they are too cheap to call in the weatherman for the weekend. Unbelievable.

SUMMER DRAWING TO A CLOSE

Well, summer's almost over now. The days are getting shorter (and hotter), and the hint of football is in the air with two-a-days getting going. I remember my friend Lannie (now a paraplegic) saying that if you could get through two-a-days at Rice you could get through anything, and I had to remind him of that when he became paralized from the neck down. He's about 70 now and still kicking asses at the rehab from all the young gunshot victims and all. Anyway, I think there is a new addition to the family from Kenny's daughter, Leslie, in Missouri. I am now the proud owner of 2 old Suburbans, one a 1990 vintage and the other a newer 1993 model. the 1990 has a piston ring problem and is smoking so bad that I took it off the road in hopes of selling it, but just about that time gas went to $4.00 per gallon so there's not a lot of demand for old, smoking, gas hogging Suburbans - even among the Latino population. I got stopped and told the cop that the car was 18 years old and therefore old enough to smoke, but he wasn't impressed. I then told him I was doing my share to melt that Artic ice to help get at all that oil up there and asked what he was doing to help - My date with the Judge is next week.

BAITCAMP DEFIES ODDS, EXPERTS; SURVIVES INTACT

Despite the dire predictions of death, mayhem, flooding, high winds, storm surge, high tides, looting, vandalism, shootings, etc. resulting from the arrival on dry land of Hurricane Shelia Jackson Lee (nicknamed Dotty), the Baitcamp remains in tact, dry, and undamaged. Power stayed on throughout the ordeal despite reports of over 1/2 inch of rain, thunder and lightening, winds approaching 20 miles per hour, and tides almost 1 foot above normal. I never did see any reporterettes out in puddles telling us it was raining, but I don't know if that was because there were none or because I don't have a television. Either way, it probably doesn't matter. An interview with the owner of Big Gene's Bait Camp shortly after the storm arrived didn't shed much light on the situation. While he was outside when the initial storm started, all he would say after coming inside was "Meow." Many, including this writer, considered that comment more intelligent than anything the press had been reporting all week. Can't wait for the next one to get started - hopefully next week. DOLLY ROARS ASHORE

Vicious killer Cat 1 Hurricane Dolly roared ashore in Seabrook about 5AM today, sporting almost 1/2" of rain and sustained winds of 15 mph with gusts over 17 miles per hour. In a somewhat unique twist, there was also lightening and thunder accompanying the storm. No animals were injured in making this report but my cat Krispy was outside when the storm struck and scratched on the door alerting me that he wanted to come it. I did not turn on the TV to look for any reporterettes standing in mud puddles telling me it was raining as I figured I could just wait until later and watch the replays. Headed back to bed for now.

Well, Dolly has moved northerly and formed up nicely in the Gulf now and has reached that magic 75 mph wind speed required to become a Cat 1 hurricane. In Houston, the radar is barely showing some of the offshore bands related to the large cloud formation you see north of the main storm center. Maybe we'll get a little rain out of this deal, which we need, and if we are lucky they might send a reporterette out in the street to stand in a puddle, blow wind in her face with a fan, and tell us that it's raining or storming or something. Can't wait to see that. Anyway, more updates later tonight if needed, otherwise tomorrow.

Well, the local media is really hyping this thing up as expected. They do admit from time to time that all indications are that this thing will go several hundred miles south of us, but then come out with the uncertainties about their forecasts and how these things are unpredictable and can change on a dime, blah, blah, blah. Year in and year out, all summer long, they can't wait to start hyping hurricane season. Most people that I know who evacuated for Rita (I stayed here) tell me that they have no intention of leaving again, no matter what the risk. You can only cry "wolf" so many times and people finally quit listening. Now it's sort of like "Dolly to kill us all one hour from now, but first, here's Blondie Bigboobs with the traffic." Pathetic, and getting worse. I believe the press is a greater risk than any of the hurricanes. More later.
